As an athlete at Huntington High School and North College Hill High School in Cincinnati, Ovinton J'Anthony "O. J." Mayo was considered by several media outlets to be the best high school basketball player in the United States. He went on to play college basketball for the University of Southern California (USC) where he accumulated 684 points with a 44.2 field goal percentage in his one season there. Mayo opted not to return to USC for his sophomore year and instead entered the 2008 NBA draft. Mayo was selected third overall in the draft by the Memphis Grizzles being picked behind only Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley. During his first season in the NBA, Mayo scored over 1500 points with a 43.8 field goal percentage. In that rookie campaign. Mayo scored 30 or more points seven times and was runner up to Derrick Rose for the NBA Rookie of the Year honors.
